As per WHO - World Health Organization, 20 per cent of women in developed countries including the US smoke, and in developing countries about 9 percent of women smoke. The women do not stop smoking even though it is one of the major things to avoid during pregnancy. Smoking during pregnancy leads to pregnancy complications and if all pregnant woman were to stop smoking, it can be expected that there would be a eleven per cent reduction in still births and a five per cent reduction in newborn deaths. The hazards in pregnancy from smoking is well brought out by the fact that there are more than 2500 chemicals in cigarette smoke and it is not yet known which harm the growing baby, but harm they do! Smoking almost increases 200 percent woman's risk of having a low birth weight baby. Smoking slows fetal growth. The more the smoking more are the risks to the baby dear. Even if a lady stops smoking by end of first pregnancy trimester, she is no more likely to have a low-birth weight baby than a woman who never smoked.
Smoking causes pregnancy complications such as placenta previa and placental abruption. Both may lead to heavy bleeding at delivery time exposing mother and baby to danger. Smoking during pregnancy may increase premature rupture of PROM membranes. When PROM takes place within 37 weeks of pregnancy, the term is pre-term PROM, and it often results in the birth of a premature baby. Women who smoke are also understood to have more trouble trouble conceiving than nonsmokers. There have also been observed withdrawal like symptoms in babies of smokers in that they difficult to quieten than non-smokers babies.
