Perineal Massage

There are certain preparations which have to be taken prior to the childbirth. To ensure that the mother and the child suffer less, the physicians adopt various ways. Perineal massage is one such method which includes the massaging of a pregnant woman's perineum around the vagina in preparation for childbirth. This is done with a purpose to prevent tearing of the perineum during birth. This also spared the need for an episiotomy or forceps delivery. This perineal massage has always proved helpful for the pregnant women.

All over the world believes that perineal massage is quite fruitful and its effectiveness in reducing class two and three level tears is evident from several cases. The importance of Perineal massage is felt both by the doctors and the pregnant mothers. This massage generally helps to prepare your perineal tissues for the stretching of birth. There is no denial of the fact that the tissues around the vaginal opening are to be conditioned with sufficient massage. The first thing to do before you start with your perineal massage is to scrub your hands and trim your thumb nails.

The modern medical science has witnessed different types of childbirth and labor, and for all childbirth, perineal massage holds immense importance. The pregnant women are advised to sit in a warm comfortable area and spread their legs apart in a semi-sitting birthing position. The doctors recommend the use of pure vegetable oil, or a water-soluble lubricant like K-Y Jelly on your fingers and thumbs and around your perineum. Petroleum-based oil is to be avoided. After you insert your thumbs deep inside your vagina and spread your legs, you need to press the perineal area down toward the rectum.

The process continues as you gently stretch the opening until you feel a slight burn. The lower part of the vaginal canal is gently massaged. The doctors forbid you to be vigorous as that could cause bruising. During the massage avoid pressure on the urethra as this could induce irritation or infection. It is a commonly accepted notion that perineal massage must be practiced from the 34th week of pregnancy. It has been reported that women who practice perineal massage in the last six weeks of pregnancy run a less risk to get an episiotomy. The perineal massage helps the woman to become familiar with stretching sensations in this area. This will make her feel relax when stinging occurs just before the childbirth.
