Colicky Babies

Colic in babies, probably occurs due to some discomfort, either due to certain ailments in the digestive system, or, due to accumulation of gas in the stomach. There are no specific reasons that have been understood to cause this colic pain in babies. Many believe that Colicky Babies cry a lot due to certain allergic responses to milk. But this is also not the case as many babies who are regularly breastfed have seen to suffer from colic. It has been estimated that almost 25% of the newborns are Colicky Babies.

These Colicky Babies are found to show direct symptoms of colic from the 3rd to 6th week after birth and are often found to cry more than 3 hours a day. The colicky condition normally doesn't persist after the baby is in the 3rd month. Out of the several theories set forth to explain the cause of colic the widely popular one is the involvement of some kind of Gastro Esophageal Reflex Disease (GERD) that is believed to cause colic in infants.

The other theories about colic propose that it is caused due to dysfunctions in the stomach leading to digestive problems in babies. This is hard to accept, as most Colicky Babies show healthy appetite and produce normal and consistent stool, depending on their diets. Certain problems of vomiting have been associated with the symptom of Colic in babies. This is also not a popular belief, as vomiting occurs due to a host of other complications. The Colicky Babies may or may not have vomiting tendencies. In fact the problem of vomiting or spitting up of milk is a common problem with babies, for which they not necessarily be colicky at all.

There is still another belief that colic in babies occur due to accumulation of excessive gas in the stomach and intestine. This can be caused when the baby opens the mouth when crying and swallows too much air at a time. Researches show that Colicky Babies actually cry a lot and develop the gas by swallowing in air. So formation of gas in the stomach is definitely not a causative factor for Colic in babies. There are however, several ways to reduce the symptoms of crying in Colicky Babies. The symptoms of Colic can be reduced, if the baby is not overfed and is consistently burped by patting at the back after each controlled feed.
Trying to maintain a relaxing atmosphere for the baby by slowly rocking the baby in a swing or playing some soothing music, can reduce the crying bouts and hence nullify the colicky condition to some extent.
