Among all the diseases that affect babies, worm problems are the most common. Worm problems in babies may take place from various sources. Several medicines are available to treat the problem; however, precaution is better than cure.

Tapeworms, according to biology, are regarded as parasitic worms. They generally inhabit in some of animals' intestinal track. Some of them come into the human bodies when food like pork or meat is taken by people. However, these worms do not enter the body of a baby directly.

There are two major types of tapeworms which are known to be a danger to the babies. They are dwarf tapeworm (scientific name : Hymenolepis nana) and rodent tapeworm (scientific name : Hymenolepis diminuta). Between these two types, the former is known to be the primary reason of worm problems in babies.
  • Source and Affects: The dwarf tapeworm generally enters the bodies of babies through contact with other people's bodies. In most of the cases, mothers are the source of these types of worms. These tapeworm infections are very serious as far as their consequences are concerned. There are cases of abnormal development of the babies as well as severe mental disorder among them which have been caused by these worms.
  • Symptoms: Terrible abdominal pain is the first symptom which is commonly noticed among babies. Yet the pain cannot be traced in any certain area of the abdomen.
    Bowel movements may also become loose and mucus may come out of body while excreting. Sometimes the infected babies may also suffer from uncontrollable headache and nausea.
  • Treatment: There are several kinds of treatments for the worm problems in babies. Niclosamide is one of the known drugs, which is used for this purpose. This drug is actually produced in the digestive tract of the babies and when it is forcefully applied on the worms, it destroys the worm. Checking the stool samples of the babies is necessary in order to understand the actual condition of the infection. There are several oral medication prescribed by doctors too for the babies.
