Miscarriage can be defined as spontaneous abortion which results in the loss of pregnancy when the fetus cannot survive before reaching 20th week of pregnancy. Presently, miscarriage has been recorded in 15- 20 per cent of recognized pregnancies and 80 per cent of miscarriages occur within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. It would be very wrong to assume that there is a rare chance of successful pregnancy after a spontaneous miscarriage. Most of the women experience successful pregnancy after one spontaneous miscarriage.
Miscarriage is recognized as the most common form of pregnancy complications at the early stages of pregnancy. Early miscarriages refer to those ones which occur before the completion of six weeks of LMP or Last Menstrual Period. Miscarriages which occur after the sixth week of LMP are medically termed as clinical spontaneous abortion. It has been found out that most miscarriages occur during the first trimester. Miscarriages in the first 13 weeks are characterized by chromosomal abnormalities and pregnancies with genetic problems usually end up in miscarriages.
| It is important to note that chromosomal problems have usually nothing to do with parents. Genetic problems are quite common in aged parents and so, miscarriage rate is pretty high in case of older women. Progesterone deficiency is another major cause of early miscarriage. The doctors try to prevent this kind of miscarriage by prescribing progesterone supplements. These supplements should be taken throughout the first trimester of pregnancy. Uterine malformation and cervical problems are common causes of miscarriages in the second trimester and 15 per cent of pregnant women gets affected by those.
