Multiple Births

By Multiple Births, we mean birth of more than one child from one egg. In recent times, there is a rise in the birth of twins, triplets and multiple births. Multiple births can be of two broad types- identical and fraternal. Multiple births are fine but in some cases it might lead to complications. Single child in the womb gets proper nourishment from the mother; when she is carrying more than one child nourishment gets shared. This leads to improper development of one of the zygotes or all of them. To gather detailed information on multiple births read the page.

Several factors are responsible for the birth of multiple children from one egg. Here we provide you with some of the causes that contribute to the birth of multiple children:

Heredity: If there is a history of multiple births in the woman's family side, it has been seen that she has more chance of delivering multiple children.
Race: Some specific race, such as Africans are more likely to have multiple births.
Number of prior pregnancies: When a woman has more than one pregnancy, the chance of multiple birth increases.
Delayed childbearing: Older women has a higher chance of having multiple births
Infertility treatment: Use of fertility drugs increases the chance of multiple pregnancies. It stimulates the release of eggs from ovaries and transfers multiple embryos in the womb.

Types of multiple births:

Multiple births are of two types: monozygotic (identical) and dizygotic (fraternal). In case of identical twins all the babies born from one egg have a similar look and appearance; in case of fraternal twins the siblings are not similar looking.

Sometimes "supertwins" are also born. By supertwins, we mean triplets or more. This type of multiple births is rare.
