Premature Delivery

A full term pregnancy usually lasts for 40 weeks. But, according to medical experts, a baby born on the 38th week of pregnancy is considered to be a fully developed infant or a full term infant. Premature delivery takes place between 22 nd and 37th week of pregnancy. And, you will be shocked to know that one out of every ten births in United States is a premature delivery.

If the delivery takes place around 37th week of pregnancy, then, it would surely be counted as premature delivery but in this case the infant usually does not suffer from any prematurity problem. But, those who are delivered around 32 weeks, they develop symptoms of prematurity. The premature infants would not be able to feed by mouth, to breathe properly and their body temperatures fluctuate a lot. In premature delivery, the major organs of the preemie's are not fully developed and so, he or she suffers from frequent health problems. Preemies delivered on 32nd week are born with serious health problems and the earlier an infant is born, the higher is the risk factor.

Premature delivery is surely an emergency option and the doctors are forced to take this decision after analyzing the condition of the fetus and the mother. Placenta problems, infection in the mother, pregnancy with twins or more, complications in uterus or cervix or the effect of drug or alcohol on the fetus usually lead to premature delivery. Premature delivery takes place when the doctors realize that it is not safe for both the fetus and the mother to go for a full term pregnancy and the baby is taken out from the mother's womb. After premature delivery, the preemies are transferred to neonatal intensive care unit and heart rate, breathing rate and body temperature of the new born are monitored over there.
The preemies are even put on warmers and they are fed by tube. Tube feeding is continued till the preemie gets matured enough to breathe, suck and swallow by his own. In short, the preemies are made matured artificially in the neonatal intensive care unit while the normal babies grow in the uterus of the mother.
