What is Colposcopy: Colposcopy is a painless and simple visual test of a woman's cervix. The test has no hassle and it takes only 10 to 15 minutes to perform the whole test. This is an easy procedure and is almost similar to a PAP smear. It can be done in the chamber of your gynecologist.
Colposcopy and pregnancy: Colposcopy is absolutely safe during pregnancy. However, if you are pregnant and scheduled for a colposcopy test then inform your doctor. If you are not sure of your pregnancy then you can confirm it by a urine or blood test. Colposcopy is also safe after 6 weeks of delivery. A cervical biopsy is sometimes done during colposcopy. Chance of miscarriage during colposcopy is almost negligible.
Risks of Colposcopy: There is no such risk with colposcopy. However, some women have a genital infection after a colposcopy is done. Some women also complain of vaginal bleeding following a colposcopic test.

Colposcopy is also recommended when HPV test shows high chances for the presence of HPV test. Colposcopy is done to investigate the cervix as well as the surrounding area.
How a colposcopy done: Colposcopy is a visual test of the cervix and the adjoining areas. The gynecologists use a lighted magnifying device known as colposcope to look at the cervix more closely. Sometimes a camera or video is also attached to the colposcope to take pictures of the cervix. Prior to colposcopy, acetic acid and iodine are used with a cotton swab to clean the area for a better view.

Colposcopy during menstrual cycle is not done as the blood clots may obstruct the view of the cervix and the surrounding organs.
