Pregnancy Old Wives Tales

Along with pregnancy, comes a list of precautionary measures and symptoms. Pregnancy old wives tales or myths play a major role in a women’s life, during her pregnancy months. These pregnancy old wives tales get passed from one generation to generation. Handful of them turns out to be hilarious; whereas, some are found to be logical and absolutely right.

Couple of the pregnancy old wives tales might not be justified from the medical perspective but turns out to be right in the practical field. Tales related to the health of the mother and baby sometimes turns out to be quite beneficial; hence they can be followed.

True pregnancy old wives tales:
  • Fish is brain food: It has been proved that omega-3 fatty acids, the chief content of fish, are very important for proper functioning of brain. In addition, pregnant women are advised not to intake too much of shark, swordfish and tuna because these fishes contain high percentage of mercury.
  • Thumb sucking causes buck teeth: Too much of sucking the thumb by the child may cause harm to the proper growth of his/ her teeth and jaws.
  • Chocolate cause acne: Nothing is very sure about this old myth. However, it is noticed in few cases that pregnant women witness the breakouts of acne after consuming chocolates.
False pregnancy old wives tales:
  • Dark nipples indicate a boy: It is a completely false myth because the color of the nipples can never indicate the sex of the child. The darkness of the nipples is just a cause of an increase of the melanocyte-stimulating hormone and progesterone.
  • If the heart rate of the fetus is below 140 BPM (beats per minute) then it is a boy: This is another wrong myth because a baby girl’s heart rate surpasses a baby boy’s only after the birth. Hence, just by the heart beat it is very difficult to judge the sex of the baby.
  • Coffee stunts the growth of the child: It is completely wrong. But it is true that too much of caffeine is not proper for a baby’s diet.
  • Putting up extra weight near the belly means a girl child; whereas, weight around bottom and the hips means a boy child: Increase of the stomach or hip or bottom solely depends on one’s torso. It never indicates the sex of the child.
