Bromocriptine is considered to be a popular drug for treating amenorrhea, a condition when mature women do not experience menstrual period, consecutively for 3 months. Amenorrhea is regarded as one of the prime causes of infertility. Though Bromocriptine is used in the treatment of amenorrhea, it is also used to treat some other diseases, as for example, Parkinson's disease, pituitary tumors, cocaine addiction and tumors in men.

One of the side effects of Bromocriptine is upset stomach, so it is advisable to take this medicine with milk or food. It comes in the form of tablet or capsule, which has to be taken orally. Though the dosage is once or twice a day, the doctors can advise to take it several times in a day, as per the condition of the patient. It is advised to read the instructions carefully and to consult the doctor,.in case any need arises. It should be taken exactly the same way as directed by doctor, so that it yields positive results. Do not stop the medication suddenly without the advice of your doctor as this can be harmful for your health.

When Bromocriptine is prescribed for amenorrhea, within 6 to 8 weeks of time, the menstrual period begins. If the medication is prescribed for becoming pregnant, then, birth control methods should be adapted till the menstrual period becomes normal. After pregnancy is confirmed, one should stop taking this medication and consult doctor, immediately.

There are certain precautions, which should be followed while taking Bromocriptine. You should consult your doctor about other medications that you are already taking. Some of these medications include drugs for high blood pressure, erythromycin, drugs for migraine, and anti depressive drugs. You should also inform your doctor about your earlier ailments heart, if there were any. Bromocriptine is also responsible for a feeling of drowsiness. Please note twhat alcohol intake can increase the drowsiness, so, consult your doctor if you have to consume alcohol on a regular basis or occasionally.

Though Bromocriptine is very effective in controlling the condition of amenorrhea, it is not without any side effects. Common side effects of Bromocriptine are fatigue, dizziness, constipation, vomiting and headache along with upset of stomach. So, immediately consult your doctor if you have any of these side effects, after you start taking Bromocriptine.
