Clomiphene or clomifene is regarded as a quite effective drug for treating different infertility syndromes in women. It is primarily used to induce ovulation in those women, who are incapable of producing ova or eggs, but desire to be pregnant. The function of Estrogen, a female hormone, is to develop the eggs in the ovaries and to release it for fertilization. Sometimes, Clomifene is also used to treat several male infertility syndromes. Other than its usage in menstrual abnormalities and male infertility, it is also quite effective for treating fibrocystic breasts and for persistent production of breast milk.

Clomiphene is available in the form of tablet, which has to be taken orally. Usual dosage of clomiphene is once daily for 5 days, starting from the fifth day of the menstrual cycle. A little advice so that you do not forget to take this medicine; fix a time daily for taking this medicine. Do read the instructions in the label carefully, and take help from your doctor or pharmacist if you feel the need for it. You should take the exact dose of this drug as directed by your physician.

There are certain precautions, which you should follow, while you are under the medication of clomiphene. Take the advice of your doctor if you are already aware that you are allergic to clomiphene.You should also inform your doctor if you are taking some other medications or vitamins. Previous history of ovarian cysts, liver disease, pituitary tumor, vaginal bleeding, adrenal disease and thyroid should also be conveyed to the doctor.

This drug has a tendency to stimulate the chance of multiple pregnancy. So, in advance, discuss about the risks of multiple pregnancy with your doctor. If you become pregnant while undergoing this medication report it to your doctor immediately.

One of the side effects of clomiphene is blurred vision. The other side effects of clomiphene are vomiting, stomach upset, headache, flushing and abnormal vaginal bleeding. Apart from blurred vision, some serious side effects of comiphene are weight gain, double vision, visual spots, shortness of breath and lower abdomen or stomach pain. Long term use of this drug can increase the risk of ovarian cancer, so it is not advisable to consume this drug for more than 6 consecutive menstrual cycles.
