The presence of hormones in human body is very crucial for life. The main function of hormones is to carry messages from glands to cells. Maintaining chemical level in blood vessels is one of the major aspects of hormones. The protein hormones secreted by gonadotrope cells of the pituitary gland in vertebrates are called Gonadotrophins. The presence of Gonadotrophins acts as a catalyst for chemical changes which is necessary for growth, development, and energy. There are basically two principal Gonadotrophins. These are Luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Both the hormones comprises of two peptide chains, an alpha chain and a beta chain. The chains are linked with by Hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces. The Luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) are identical and share alpha chains.

Mechanism involved in the working of Gonadotrophins:
Besides the two above mentioned Gonadotrophins, Luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), there is a third human gonadotrophin namely, human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) which is produced during pregnancy by the placenta. The receptors of Gonadotrophins are normally embedded in target cell membranes. Besides being embedded on the surface area, the gonadotrophin receptors are also coupled to the G-protein system. When the receptors bond with protein system, signals are triggered within the cells by the cyclic AMP second messenger system.

Release of Gonadotrophins:
Under the control of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), the Gonadotrophins are released. It gets released from the arcuate nucleus and preoptic area of the hypothalamus. While the gonads, testes and ovaries are the main target organs of LH and FSH, the Gonadotrophins affect multiple cell types and arouse multiple responses basically from the target organs.

Gonadotrophin deficiency:
The deficiency of Gonadotrophin is basically related to the pituitary disease which results in hypogonadism thus posing a problem of infertility.
Administering gonadotropins is a treatment option which can be availed by those suffering from infertility. It therefore works as fertility medication. This can be either produced by the process of extraction and purification from urine or can be a result of recombinant DNA production. It needs to be kept in mind that the failure or loss of gonads results in increased level of LH and FSH in the blood. This basically happens since pituitary gland tries to make up for the insufficient gonads.
