Pregnancy is one of the crucial stage in any woman's life. The very thought of a new creation of life is exciting as is overwhelming. But the making of a healthy baby is not all that easy and requires extensive preparations in terms of charting out proper dietary measures. Proper food and nutrition is very much necessary for the over all growth of the child. So the nutritional factor cannot be ignored under any circumstances during the period of pregnancy. One of major nutritional aspects is the intake of minerals in proportion.

A well balanced diet will certainly be helpful in providing a better blend of the essential vitamins and the minerals. During pregnancy however, the intake of minerals is much higher than the normal times. The intake of minerals is required for ensuring the development of the fetus. Among the intake of minerals, Calcium is one such element that is responsible for the development of bones and teeth of the baby. One of the major function of the Calcium is the essential role it plays in assisting the production of fluids within the lymphatic system. The average recommended daily intake is about 1.5 grams during pregnancy.

Fruits and juice: Fortified orange juice.
Pulses, cereals & nuts: Almonds, beans, soya milk, sesame.
Animal products: Milk, cheese, yogurt.
Vegetables: Broccoli, kale (seaweed), dandelion greens, okra, cabbage.

The intake of minerals also comprises of Magnesium, that is required for cell multiplication in the growing fetus and is an essential component that maintains the balance of the neuromuscular system. Generally 200 to 300 mg is required daily but during pregnancy this rises to about 50 percent more.

Vegetables: Chocolate, cocoa powder.
Animal products: Milk.
Pulses, cereals & nuts: Breakfast cereals, rice (complete), flour (whole wheat), wheat germ, almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, spinach & other green vegetables

No compromise is to be done in terms of the mineral intake as it can be harmful for the mother and the child
