Adnexal Tumors

Adnexal tumors is one of the gynecological problems that has become major concern in the recent times. A follicular cyst is produced by ovary for six or seven times per year. These cysts resolve by themselves during menstrual cycle. But in certain cases, these cysts survives and becomes as large as 7 cm. Such condition deserves special attention as they tend to result in adnexal tumors.

Symptoms of Adnexal tumors

Adnexal tumors are common with women suffering from trauma, rupture, torsion, infection. A woman having adnexal tumors is hardly aware of it in the initial phases. There is little pathological problems except abdominal pressure or urinary problems. Young girls below ten years suffer from acute pain. Gastrointestinal problems, abdominal bloating and pelvic pressure are the symptoms for malignant adnexal tumors.

Diagnosis of adnexal tumors

Earlier only pelvic examinations could reveal the presence of adnexal tumors. But vaginal ultrasonography, MRI scan, CT scan, doppler color scans and positron emission tomography scan have made the diagnosis more easy. A laproscopy may enable the surgeons to visualise and properly diagnose adnexal tumors. During the diagnosis the surgeons are concerned with the effect of the tumor on the other organs and whether the tumors are malignant or not.

Complications

Complications tend to develop if adnexal tumors are associated with infections in lungs and urinary tract. Sometimes bleeding occurs due to infections. If the adjacent organs like blood vessels, nerves, ureters or urinary bladders are injured then the case may become more serious. If the patient suffers from pelvic vein thrombosis together with pulmonary embolism then the existing condition tends to become worse.

Treatment of adnexal tumors

If the adnexal masses are comparatively smaller, then pelvic examinations can alone diagnose such problems. If the masses tend to increase then a surgical treatment is necessary.

Leiomyomas masses have to be treated with gonadotropin hormone which can diminish the size by at least 50%. Radiologic ablation can be used for the purpose.

Apart from these medical therapy, women suffering from adnexal tumors are advised to take birth control pills of low dise in order to check the size of the tumor.

If the tumor is malignant then there is hardly any option except surgery. In such cases adnexal masses or sometimes the entire adnexal structure is removed by surgical operation. In case of malignant adnexal tumors, patients have to undergo radiation therapy or chemotherapy. The patients also have to go through a prolong medical treatment in order to get completely cured.
