One of the effective surgeries for eradicating gross malignancies of the cervix is through the Conization of Cervix. In the lay man's term Conization of Cervix entails a medical procedure in which there is a surgical removal of a cone shaped wedge from the cervix of the female body. It is extremely beneficial for thediagnosis of squamous or glandular intraepithelial lesions, in order to expel microinvasive carcinomas, and also a trusted treatment for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Since cervical carcinomas can also lead to cancer, excision through Conization of Cervix becomes all the more important. Conization of cervix is thought to be an integral tool for the diagnosis of the cause of positive cervical cytology in women, without any visible wounds and pain. It is also adopted as one of the treatment methods for CIN.
Medical researchers believe that, on a global scale, cervical carcinoma is the third most common reasons for cancer-induced death in the female population. Almost 2% of the total female population suffer from such a disease. It is a major triggering factor for female morbidity especially in developing countries, such as some of those in Latin America, Asia and Central and Eastern parts of Europe.
| Methods adopted for Conization of the cervix: Conization of Cervix can be performed in several ways; either therapeutic Conization or surgical Conization. In case of surgery, the procedure can be done with scalpel or cold-knife, CO2 laser or even electrosurgical loop or LEEP. Therapeutic conization for the treatment of CIN is an authentic and accepted procedures in the management of CIN, as proved by the medical studies of the Scandinavian and Austrian researchers. The cold-knife surgery is more primitive, and is not that trusted by gynecologists these days. In todays modern medical world, using laser for the purpose of conization is not only thought to be effective but also budget friendly. However, both therapeutic and diagnostic Conization of Cervix should be prevented during pregnancies, because it might lead to death of the fetus.
