Hip Cramps

Hip cramps are very common during pregnancy. Hip cramps take place during the second and third trimester of pregnancy. The last trimester of pregnancy is when the cramps and pains intensifies to a great extent. A pregnant woman experiences hip pain because the lower region of the body that carries the baby is strained as the baby grows within. As the weight of the baby increases, the region near the hip is weighed down with prolonged carrying of the baby. The awkwardness in posture occurs mostly in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. This contributes to the development of hip cramps. In the first trimester of pregnancy, there are hormones released in the body that helps in the softening of the muscles and joints.

The hormones released in the first trimester helps the body to prepare itself for the later stages of pregnancy. This causes the hip cramps to an extent. For the preparation of birth, there is Relaxin in the body in the pelvis region that contributes to the hip pains. This also makes the expecting mother more prone to injuries. Prolonged period of inactivity too leads to hip pains in pregnancy. There are various ways by which the hip cramps can be reduced and made bearable. The hip pains at times increases while you are sleeping making it difficult to sleep in peace. The posture while you are sleeping contributes to the rise of hip pain in pregnancy.

In case of hip cramps during sleep, you can take pillows to support the legs and abdominal region. Sleeping in the semi-reclined position with the support of pillows can be tried. They help in making the pain bearable. Certain activities that leads to strain should be avoided by a pregnant woman. Too much exercises and walking aggravates hip cramps. However exercises in moderation and practicing few can help immensely. Uneven pelvis is a reason behind hip cramps in many ways. In this case, a pregnant woman can visit a chiropractor to correct the fault.

Another way to relieve yourself from hip cramps is by getting massages. Pilate and yoga are exercises that have made the hip cramps reduce. A healthy diet should be followed with lots of calcium intake as this will help in the strengthening of the bones after delivery. Correct postures while sitting and sleeping is necessary to reduce hip pains. One should try to sit upright and sleep supported by pillows. Regular checkups must be followed during pregnancy.
