Hyperpigmentation affects most of the pregnant women. Hyperpigmentation is characterized by dark patches in specific areas of the skin.
Causes of Hyperpigmentation:
Hyperpigmentation is caused due to the excessive production of melanin. Melanin is the pigment that is solely responsible for the color of the skin. Hyperpigmentation occurs due to the excessive secretion of melanocyte stimulating hormone that enhances the production of melanocytes. The melaocytes produce the pigment melanin. Hyperpigmentation affects the areas that are not exposed to light like the genital areas, armpits etc.
A dark patch known as nigra is formed in the abdominal region. Melasma is another hyperpigmentation that occurs in regions that are exposed to the sun. Some of the regions that are afflicted by melasma are nose, cheek etc.
Treatment of Hyperpigmentation:
The pregnant women are advised to maintain their personal hygiene. They can consult the dermatologist for the treatment of the dermatological diseases. A lot of medicines are available in the market to ward of hyperpigmentation.
Hyperpigmentation and other skin disorders:
The pregnant women suffer from various other types of dermatological disorder. Hair may grow in the face, hands and the legs of the pregnant women. This disorder is called hirsutism.
They can also experience severe hair loss. The nails of the pregnant women break easily.
The sweat glands of the pregnant women become hyperactive that causes profuse sweating.
Skin rashes with itching sensation also develop in pregnant women. Skin rashes occur in hips,abdomen , hands etc. The skin of the abdomen may expand and contain a watery medium within it. This dermatological disorder occurs during the second trimester of pregnancy and is known as herpes gestationis.

The condition of the pregnant woman suffering from psoriasis, a genetic dermatological disorder, improves during pregnancy. There is an increase in the production of a protein known as Interleukin 10 that is responsible for the alleviating psoriasis in pregnant women previously afflicted with psoriasis.
