Pregnancy Tests


A lot of tests are available for detection of pregnancy. A woman believes she is pregnant after a missed period. A lot of tests are available to detect pregnancy. Human Choronic Gonadotrophin (HCG)hormone is the hormone that is produced by the placenta.

Pregnancy Tests:

The HCG is produced 10 days after the fertilization of sperm with the ovum. Urine test is one of the preliminary tests that confirm the presence of HCG in urine.

Various kits are available in the pharmacy for conducting the urine test.

Urine Pregnancy Test:

Urine is taken in a boiled container and then the strips or the sticks are dipped in it.The change in the color of the strips confirms pregnancy.Urine Test may turn out to be negative first and then it may be positive.This is due to the fact HCG may not be produced at the time of conducting the test. HCG may be produced when the test shows positive result for the second time.

Urine test may be conducted in the house or in a diagnostic center.Urine test is not the confirmatory test for detection of pregnancy.

Blood pregnancy test:

Blood Pregnancy test is the most reliable test for detection of pregnancy. The blood pregnancy tests monitor the level of HCG.
There are two types of blood pregnancy tests.

Quantitative blood pregnancy tests measures the amount of HCG in the blood stream.

The amount of HCG in the blood stream increases during the first trimester after which it diminishes.The doctor can minimize the risk of miscarriage by monitoring the level of HCG by quantitative blood pregnancy test.

Qualitative blood pregnancy test confirms the presence of HCG in the blood stream.

Pelvic exam:

Pelvic exam is another important test to detect pregnancy.

The doctor conducts the test when the patient shows the symptoms of pregnancy in spite of showing negative results in the urine test. The doctors puts his hands in the vagina and exerts force on the muscles of the abdomen. The test enables the doctor to measure the dimension of the uterus, fallopian tube and the ovaries.
