Biophysical Profile is an uncomplicated painless test, which is carried out at the time of pregnancy. It is performed to ascertain the well being of the baby. Biophysical profile test is specially carried out to assess whether the baby is getting proper supply of oxygen within the womb or not. The BPP test includes information from two types of sources – the monitoring of the fetal heart rate and the ultrasound imaging. The ultra sound imaging helps to determine the amniotic fluid volume or AFV. This imaging technique also helps to determine the different types of fetal movements. On the other hand, the FHR is obtained by a high speed microprocessor and Doppler. These medical instruments help to get updated reading.
The parameters upon which BPP test is based:
The BPP incorporates 5 parameters such as ultra sound measurement of the amniotic fluid volume, the non stress test, overall body movements, tone and examination of the presence and absence of fetal breathing movements.
Reasons for performing Fetal Biophysical Profile test:
Biophysical Profile test is primarily performed if you are at high risk in the third trimester or if you have crossed your delivery date. This test is also carried out if you have gestational hypertension, diabetes and high blood pressure. You need to undergo this medical test if your baby is not growing properly or is not behaving normally or is less active. Biophysical profile test is also considered as an alternative to Contraction Stress Test.
Procedure of Biophysical profile:
If you are going to undergo a biophysical profile test, then you need to eat a meal just before the test. It will thus help the baby to move around more easily. Even though there is no proof that taking a meal helps in the test, yet there is no harm in having food before the test. It is also a good idea to use the bathroom before undergoing this test because you are required to lie before a monitor for an hour during the examination.
Results of Biophysical profile:
Biophysical profile consists of five components such as heartbeat, muscle tone, body movements, breathing movements and amniotic fluid. Each part is assigned with a score of either 2 or 0.

| The score 2 represents normal and zero means abnormal. The individual scores are added to get the total result. If the total score is between the ranges of 8 to 10 then the result is considered as normal. If the total score is 6 then it is considered as an intermediate stage. But if the total score is below 6, then it is definitely worrisome.
