Chorionic Villus Sampling is a type of investigation, which is conducted during early pregnancy. This type of investigation enables the pathologist to detect preliminary problems pertaining to the baby ( fetus). The purpose of undergoing this type of investigation is to whether the father of the would be new born baby has any chromosomal abnormalities or not. This investigation is performed in the cases when the pregnant mother is within the age group of 35 years of age or little above that.
Chorionic Villus is known in the biological terminology as Chorionic Villi. Chorionic Villi is just like tiny fingerlike growths found in the placenta. The genes in the chorionic villus cells are the same as that of the baby’s cells. So in the Chorionic Villus Sampling for pregnancy, chorionic villus cells is taken to analyze any further problems the baby and the mother are having. This procedure is done in most of the cases during the first trimester, most during the period of 10th and 12th weeks. The moment the 12th week’s pregnancy passes off, pregnancy analysis for Chorionic Villus Sampling is not applicable.
The reason is that there is so much of amniotic fluid gets secreted around the baby, which makes it harder to carry on the investigation.
There is a process by which a chronic villus sampling is done. It can be done in the pregnancy period say within 10 to 12 weeks. This investigation will ascertain how good is the health of the baby. The investigation is done by collecting the sample by putting a thin flexible tube called catheter, through the vagina and cervix into the placenta. To extract the correct sample the help of ultrasound is of great help.
