Group B Strep Culture

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the most common cause of sepsis (blood infection) and meningitis (infection of the fluid and the lining surrounding the brain) on newborn babies. This infection on the babies is transmitted from the mother. From the records we find that around 10 to 35 per cent of the women carry this within the vagina or on the lower intestine. There is no fixed symptom that all women suffer from this disease. Generally the babies do have the chance to get infected with this disease. The pregnant mothers also suffer from these diseases prior to giving birth to the children.

Group B Strep Culture is a type of investigation, which is needed for prenatal screening. Collection of specimens for culture may be conducted in the outpatient clinic. The patient undergo this investigation as per the advise of her consultant doctor. This takes place by swabbing the lower vagina and the rectum. There are different specimen label, which clearly indicates that to which group of specimens the patient belongs to. Now Group B Strep culture during the pregnancy stage is advisable to tackle any untoward situations being faced by the pregnant mother and the newborn babies.

The pregnant women who will be identified as the carrier of Group B Streptococcus Culture should be given intravenous antibiotics during labor pain and delivery of the child by both normal procedure and caesarian procedure.

Apart from the personal and the consultant physicians, there are local and state public health agencies in collaboration with various public hospital groups deeply involved in this task. Any early detection of GBS helps the pregnant mothers and the newborn babies to escape from this worrisome disease.
