Calcitonin

Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide hormone. The C cells of the thyroid, is also known as the prohormone. It comprises a single disulfide bond. This causes the amino terminus to take on a circular shape. The hormone is also synthesized in a wide variety of different tissues. These also include the lung and intestinal tract. Calcitonin happens to be a protein based hormone.

The Copp and Cheney is responsible for the purification of the Calcitonin and it was done in the year 1962. In the early years it was known that the parathyroid glands is responsible for its secretion and much later, the fact got identified that it is the C- cells that are responsible for its secretion.

Calcitonin helps in the reduction of calcium levels in the blood. This is at least in part. It also helps to regulate the development of bones in our body. Further, the hormone helps in the retention of calcium in the bones. Thereby, it sees to it that the calcium does not move into the blood stream. This is by inhibiting the activity of the osteoclasts. The ostecolasts is a type of cell which, helps in the digestion of the bone matrix. As a result, this helps in the release of calcium and phosphorous in the blood.

Calcitonin helps in the deduction of levels of calcium in the blood. This can be seen in relation to the kidney. This hormone plays a major role as far as the calcium as well as the phosphorous metabolism is concerned. It is to be noted here that the calictonin also helps in the bone mineral metabolism and also helps in the regulation of Vitamin D.

There are certain factors which control the secretion of Calcitonin. This is the extracellular concentration of the ionized calcium. The increased levels of blood calcium strongly stimulate Calcitonin secretion.

The secretion is suppressed when the calcium concentration goes down below normal. A number of other hormones have known to stimulate Calcitonin release in several situations. It is very important that Calcitonin is released in the right quantities in the body.

Calcitonin helps in the control of certain types of osteoporosis. It has been proved to be a valuable therapy for Paget disease. This is a disorder associated with bone remodeling.
