Endorphins

The word Endorphin has been derived from two words, which are 'endogenous' and 'morphine'Endorphins are polypeptides that are produced by the pituitary gland along with hypothalamus in the vertebrates, in order to produce analgesia. It can be said that these polypeptides are natural pain killers, which function to decrease the sensation of pain in the human body, in case the body has sufferd an injury or is suffering from any serious health problem.Endorphins play a crucial role during pregnancy and childbirth. These compounds along with other sedative receptors are responsible for decreasing the feeling of pain in the vertebrates.

Scientists are not sure of the fact that whether certain activities lead to the production and release of more endorphins or not. Some of the data of current studies is absolutely not relevant to human beings, as the animals were the subject of study. Another chemical, capsaicin, is believed to stimulate the process of endorphin release. Topical capsaicin is used for the treatment of certain chronic pain. Some of the activities like running, cross country skiing and swimming are responsible for the increase of production of endorphins in human body.

The function of endorphins is more crucial during pregnancy. It is to be noted here that along with hormonal changes, a series of emotional and physiological changes occur in pregnant woman. The level of endorphins also rise in the process and it continues to rise until the mother gives birth to her child. This is the reason why most women suffer from morning sickness or nausea during the first trimester of pregnancy.

It has been noticed that the pain relieving medications, are only effective for reducing the pain temporarily. However, medicines that are consumed by the patient to decrease pain, do not play any role to increase the production of endorphins in human body. It is a hereditary factor, which determines the production of endorphins; it varies from one person to the other. It is to be said here that probably, the level of endorphins is less than the required amount among those, who experience great pain. Or it also can be said that people who do not experience great pain have higher level of endorphins in their body.

Though scientists could not come up with exact reasons for the increase and decrease of endorphins in human body, there are some alternate therapies that yield better results in the production of endorphins.
