Role of HSC or HPL

Of the Pregnancy Hormones, the Human Chorionic Somatomammotropin (HSC) is one of the hormones, which plays a major role during pregnancy. It is also known as the HSC. The hormone is known by yet another name, which is Human placental lactogen. The role of HSC or HPL is important. This hormone is secreted within the placenta. The placenta supplies food and gives protection to the embryo during pregnancy. The role of HSC or HPL is strongly related to the development of the foetus.

The Role of HSC or HPL is also in the nature of the following. The hormone helps the breast to develop those glands which in turn will help in breast feeding. This is after the delivery. It also helps in the reduction of glucose levels consumed by the mother.

It is to be noted here that the level of HSC increase steadily from the very on start of the gestation period. This occurs precisely in the third week of pregnancy Human Chorionic Somatomammotropin, is chemically a polypeptide placental hormone. Another one of the major roles associated with the HSC or HPL is that it helps to modify the metabolic rate in the body during pregnancy. This helps to release energy in the body.

When it comes to bioassay, it has been noticed that the HPL replicates the activity of prolactin. However, it has not yet been ascertained, whether this hormone has any role to play during lactation. One of the most major roles enacted by HPL, is that this hormone leads to an increase in the production of insulin and IGF-1in the body. The hormone also increases the insulin resistance. Furthermore, it leads to carbohydrate intolerance.

HPL induces liposyis. This is along with the release of free fatty acids, increase in insulin secretion and insulin resistance. With the fast release of HPL, free fatty acids became available also for the maternal body.

This helps in the facilitation, of increased glucose levels necessary for the development of foetus. It further facilitates ketones to move into the placenta. These ketones are then used by the placenta.

This is the role of HSC or HPL in the maternal organism. It is to be mentioned here that it is the estrogen that helps in the regulation of the Human Chorionic Somatomammotropin.
