Role

Relaxin plays a very important role in human as well as in animal body. The hormone is well known as a type of pregnancy hormone. However, the role of relaxin in human being is still other observation. The scientists are researching on the hormone to know the exact role of relaxin in pregnancy in human.

Role of Relaxin in human

At the time of ovulation, women generally have an increased relaxin level. During this time the hormone is produced at a higher quantity in corpus letup. But if pregnancy fails to occur, the production level of the hormone drops significantly. At the time of menstruation the drop in the level decreases to its minimum level. However, during the first trimester of pregnancy the level of production rises again. At that time deecidua produces an additional amount of relaxin. This additional produce also adds to the increased level of relaxin production.

Though Relaxin is known to facilitate the birth process, the exact role of relaxin at the time of birth and pregnancy is yet to be known. The hormone can make the cervix and pubic symphysis softer and at the same time makes them longer. Pubic symphysis refers to the area where the pubic bones come close to each other.

Relaxin also plays a major role by inhibiting the contraction of the uterus. At the time of delivery too the hormone has a major role to play. The hormone makes the path pregnancy free from obstruction by reducing the production level of Collagen tissue and by increasing the breakdown of collagen.

Role of Relaxin in animals

in case of animals too the role of relaxin as a facilitator of labor do not change. In order to facilitate the labor and pregnancy the hormone widens the pubic bone. The muscle structure in the uterine area is also relaxed as a result of the hormone. Relaxin also softens the cervix. Thus it greatly facilitates the process of pregnancy. As a result, relaxin is often termed as pregnancy hormone.

However, there are some other functions of Relaxin as well.
The hormone directly influences the metabolism of collagen tissues. The hormone also prevents collagen synthesis or production. It has a major influence on the metabolism of collagen. The hormone is a well known inhibitor of collagen synthesis. The hormone increases matrix metalloproteinase that causes collagen breakdown. Relaxin improves angiogenesis. The hormone also is known as a potential renal vasodilator.
