The uterus or the womb, as it is commonly referred to, is the most important reproductive organ of not only the human females but also of a majority of the other mammals. The uterus serves numerous important function during the process of pregnancy. The womb receives the fertilized ovum which eventually is lodged in the endometrium. The ovum is nourished by the blood vessels. It is the ovum which is transformed into an embryo which in turn develops into a fetus. After a gestation period of nine months, the child is ready to face the world.

During normal conditions, the size of the diameter of the uterus is only a few centimeters. But after the onset of pregnancy, this vital reproductive organ expands to accommodate the development and growth of the fetus. The uterus is located inside the pelvis of the females. It is connected to the vagina and to the fallopian tubes. It comprises of 4 layers, namely endometrium, myometrium, perimetrium and peritoneum. The ligaments which keep the organ in its place are the uterosacral and the cardinal ligament. These are some of the important details about the uterus related matters which you should know.
