Introduction
There have been a number of cases related to sexually transmitted diseases and sexually transmitted infections. This has a lot to do with the attitude of people towards sex, as they see it nowadays. Sex has become a mode of enjoying life to the fullest, and people have no inhibitions about it at all. Though there is no harm in enjoying life, sometimes it is better to be careful. Due to ignorance and carelessness, many people fall victim to sexually transmitted diseases and infections. They are not even aware of the harm that they are inflicting, not only on themselves but also on their partners. There are a number of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and sexually transmitted infections (STI). Cervicitis is one of the major STIs. Cervicitis is gradually taking a lot of toll on unaware human beings.
About Cervicitis
When the cervix's tissues are subjected to inflammation, the condition id called cervicitis. Cervicitis occurs in women like Urethritis occurs in men. The causes of this sexually transmitted infection are quite a few and one needs to be alert to avert Cervicitis. Quite a number of infections play a very active role in causing this STI. The most likely are gonorrhea and chlamydia, whereas some which are not as common as gonorrhea and chlamydia are herpes simplex and trichomonas vaginalis. The significance of the role of bacterial vaginosis and Mycloplasma genitalium in the cause of cervicitis is still being medically investigated.
Mucopurulent cervicitis
The characteristic feature of Mucopurulent cervicitis is an infected or mucopurulent endocervical exudate that can be seen in the endocervical duct or within an endocervical swab sample. There are many specialists who base their diagnosis of MPC on cervical bleeding that can be induced quite easily. Other criteria that can be taken into consideration for diagnosis is an increased number of polymorphonuclear leukocytes on endocervical Gram stain. However, the standardization of these criteria has not yet been done.

More often than not MPC is considered to be asymptomatic, but at times, some women have vaginal bleeding and vaginal discharge which is not deemed to be normal, especially after sexual intercourse. The probable causes behind MPC are N. gonorrhoeae or C. trachomatis. The persistence of MPC can happen although courses of antimicrobial therapy are repeated. Determinants which are non-microbiologic like inflammation in the ectopy zone can also cause persistent MPC.
Prevention
The best way is to avoid sexual contacts that can be harmful and infectious. Pap test is very necessary too in case of vaginal infections.
