About Salpingitis

Salpingitis is among the many Sexually Transmitted Infections that can later be the primary cause of Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Salpingitis is an infection where inflammation occurs in females' fallopian tubes. This sexually transmitted disease is usually associated with PID though there is no certain definition of the term PID. PID can be referred to various diseases that occur in the upper genital tracts of females, like oophoritis, endometritis, parametritis, myometritis and pelvic peritoneum infection. Unlike PID, Salpingitis is confined to its definition as a sexually transmitted infection in the fallopian tubes.

There are primarily two types of Salpingitis, acute salpingitis and chronic salpingitis. In case of acute salpingitis, the affected fallopian tubes become red and bloated. The inside walls get stuck to one another and results in blockage in the tube. At times, the fallopian tube can be held fast by the intestine that surrounds it. Unlike acute salpingitis, chronic salpingitis is more mild and symptoms are much less. It often follows an acute salpingitis attack and usually lasts for a longer stretch of time than the acute one. Hydrosalpinx often results from chronic salpingitis. The disease can be diagnosed by blood tests, pelvic examinations and mucus swab.

Symptoms of Salpingitis

The symptoms of this disease generally appear just after a menstrual period. These symptoms include: Pain at the time of ovulation, aberrant smell and color of vaginal discharge, recurrent pain during periods, pain at the time of sexual intercourse, pain in the lower back, abdominal pain, nausea, fever and vomiting.

Causes and Risk factors of Salpingitis

Originating in the vagina, the infection then rises to the fallopian tube.

As the lymph vessels can spread the infection, the other fallopian tube soon gets infected too. Risks of getting infected by the disease enhances during retral menstrual flow and the opening of the cervix during menstruation. Surgical procedures too can contribute in increasing the risk factor. Sexual intercourse is a prime cause for spreading this disease. The bacterial species that are responsible for Salpingitis include N. gonorrhoeae, C. trachomatis, Staphylococcus, Mycloplasma and Streptococcus. There are certain complications too associated with this disease. Almost 20% of the affected people are needed to be hospitalized and many patients within the age of 15 years and 44 years die from this disease.

Treatment and prevention of Salpingitis

Proper treatment and Contact tracing can reduce complications. Generally, this disease is addressed by antibiotics. One should be careful while indulging in sexual activities.
